yes they are refreshing. i think "thornament" has jumped the shark to some extent, or at least it's just becoming another design option, not a mandatory minimum requirement.
not to toot my own horn, but I posted something a bit similar talking about computer interfaces; why is shiny faux 3D the norm now?
"Thornament" -- brilliant. Loved your article, AJ, thanks for posting the link. As a web designer, am constantly asked to make things shinier, flashier, slick and sleek... but my natural aesthetic tends towards the flat, so I'm often frustrated. I may do a longer post on this -- if I do I'll be sure to feature your article front and center.
