I love the cover designs of Penguin's Great Ideas set of books - but for me the red colour used in the first series is so much more successful than the blue in the second series. Maybe because the blue seems too modern for the classic feel of the titles?

Interesting -- i feel the opposite! The blue makes me think of old china or faded textiles (I know it's not Delft blue, but that's the sort of thing I'm talking about). The red seems much too modern and vibrant to me.

So interesting that we all have such emotional responses to color. When they do the same book cover in different colors (ex. Zadie Smith's White Teeth, Jonathan Safran Foer's Everything is Illuminated, etc.), I wish they'd publish the sales results so we could all see which color sells the best/gets the best public response.

Hmm, they likely do... will have to research...
